Linguistic and cultural consultancy

Written input for solicitors and counsel where dialect, origin or cultural context is itself in issue — distinct from interpreting at a hearing.

Arabic Interview Record Review

Where the question is whether an English interview record or transcript reflects what was said in Arabic, I compare the two line by line against the recording. Interview records, covert-recording transcripts and exhibit material can all be reviewed.

You receive a written note identifying every rendering that alters meaning, with the Arabic wording and a plain-English explanation of each point.

Fixed fee: £475 per hour of recording. Written note within 7 working days. Longer or multi-part matters are quoted individually. A free 30-minute scoping call is available before you instruct.

Dialect and origin-analysis support

Where a client's claimed region or nationality is disputed — a recurring issue in Yemeni claims and in Kuwaiti Bidoon statelessness claims — I can provide a written analysis of the regional and sub-regional markers in the client's Arabic: lexical, phonological and morphological.

The output is a structured written report identifying which features of the client's speech are consistent with the region claimed, which are not, and which are indeterminate, with reasoning set out for the instructing solicitor's consideration.

Cultural and contextual briefing notes

Concise written notes on the cultural, religious and contextual factors that affect how testimony should be read. Common subjects include calendar conversion between Hijri and Gregorian dating and why it produces apparent date inconsistencies; kinship and naming conventions and how they map onto English terms; religious register in expressions of remorse or contrition; and conventions of indirect answering that can be misread as evasion.

Terminology and interpreter briefing

Bilingual glossary preparation for complex matters, and pre-hearing terminology briefings for legal teams. Drawn from practice-area glossaries built across criminal, immigration, family and mental-health work.

Scope and status of this work

This is provided as independent linguistic analysis for the solicitor's consideration. It is not, of itself, a forensic determination of nationality or origin, and it is not offered as expert evidence unless separately instructed on that basis.

I do not interpret in any matter in which I have provided consultancy to a party.

Formal expert-witness reports are not offered at present; expert witness work will be offered once formal expert witness training is complete. Until then, analysis is provided for the instructing party's consideration only.

Fees and instruction

Arabic Interview Record Review £475 per hour of recording (fixed) · Cultural briefing note from £350 · Dialect and origin report from £750.

Fixed fees are confirmed in writing against the scope before work begins. More complex or multi-part instructions are quoted individually.

A free 30-minute pre-instruction consultation is available to solicitors, barristers and caseworkers, to scope the work before you commit to it. Case evidence is not discussed outside a formal instruction.
