What is a Schedule 7 examination?

Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000 confers powers on examining officers at UK ports, airports, and international rail terminals to stop, question, and search individuals without requiring reasonable suspicion of an offence. The examination may last up to six hours. An individual examined under Schedule 7 is not under arrest but has no right to leave, must answer questions, and must provide biometric data and access to devices if required.

Where the individual does not adequately understand English, the examining officer must arrange an interpreter. The interpreter must hold appropriate security clearance for the setting. For counter-terrorism contexts, Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) clearance is the minimum standard. My CTC clearance is valid to September 2030.

Why CTC clearance matters for this work

Counter Terrorist Check is a UK government security vetting level conferred by the Disclosure and Barring Service and the Security Service. It requires detailed personal history checks, financial vetting, and close associates screening. Interpreters without CTC clearance cannot be present at certain classified briefings, cannot access certain sensitive materials, and should not be used for Schedule 7 or Section 41 work in practice.

My CTC clearance (valid to September 2030) is the same level required by HMCTS for sensitive court proceedings and by the Home Office for cleared personnel in sensitive interview settings.

Arabic dialects for counter-terrorism matters

Counter-terrorism proceedings in the UK involve Arabic speakers from a wide range of regional backgrounds. Dialect accuracy is as critical in this context as in any other legal setting โ€” and in terrorism trials, where the meaning of specific words and ideological formulations may be determinative, it is more so.

My specialist tiers are Yemeni Arabic and Sudanese Arabic โ€” both limited-pool dialects in the UK. For Iraqi, Syrian, Gulf, Kuwaiti, and Modern Standard Arabic, see the respective dialect pages.

How to instruct directly

Direct instruction is available from police forces, the Crown Prosecution Service, counter-terrorism units, chambers, and defence solicitors. For police station or custody suite bookings, call directly. For court or prosecution instruction, use the booking form or email.

When instructing, specify: the examining authority or instructing party, the setting (port/airport, custody suite, Crown Court), the dialect of the individual, and whether the matter is prosecution or defence. I will confirm availability and CTC clearance same working day.

Schedule 7 interpreter FAQ

What clearance is required for a Schedule 7 Arabic interpreter?
Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) clearance is the standard requirement for interpreters working Schedule 7 Terrorism Act 2000 examinations, Section 41 terrorism arrests, and related proceedings. My CTC clearance is valid to September 2030.
Can you interpret for a Schedule 7 examination at a UK port or airport?
Yes. CTC-cleared to September 2030 and available for Schedule 7 examinations at UK ports and airports. Remote provision via secure video link is possible where the examining officer permits.
Which Arabic dialects do you cover for counter-terrorism work?
All seven: Yemeni, Sudanese, Syrian, Iraqi, Gulf, Kuwaiti, and Modern Standard Arabic. Yemeni and Sudanese are specialist tiers. CTC clearance enables work on all of these in counter-terrorism contexts.
Can you cover both defence and prosecution in counter-terrorism matters?
Yes โ€” not in the same matter, but both defence and prosecution instruction is accepted. NRPSI impartiality standards apply identically to both sides. The same interpreter cannot work defence and prosecution on the same case.
Is remote interpretation permitted for Schedule 7 examinations?
In certain circumstances and where the examining officer permits. Schedule 7 examinations at ports typically proceed in person; however, where the examining authority authorises remote provision, this is available via secure encrypted connection.
