Home Office and asylum interpreting
Screening, credibility and substantive interviews, First-tier Tribunal (IAC) hearings and detention bail — with the dialect judgement these settings require.
Panel experience
I hold a place on the Home Office ILSU remote interpreting panel and have delivered 138 hours of asylum interpreting through it, across screening, credibility and substantive interviews. The Home Office Interpreter and Language Services Unit issued me a commendation of outstanding achievement for assignments completed in November 2025.
That work has covered specialist categories including modern slavery, LGBTQ+ claims, gender-based violence and statelessness — areas where terminology precision and register carry the highest consequences.
In September 2026 I completed UNHCR’s Country of Origin Information (COI) course, which covers how country evidence is researched, assessed and used in asylum decision-making. It informs how I handle place names, political and armed groups, and dialect-specific terms, so that the interpreted account can be tested accurately against the country evidence.
Why dialect is a credibility issue
Credibility assessments turn on consistency and directness. Both are culturally shaped. A Yemeni client who anchors a date to a season or a religious festival rather than a number is not being evasive; a client holding both Hijri and Gregorian calendars may give a date three ways, all of them truthful.
Rendered accurately but without register, these read on paper as inconsistency. The words are right and the meaning has still moved. Instructing an interpreter with the specific dialect background closes that gap before it reaches a determination.
Working with representatives
I can provide a short written note flagging register or calendar points that the tribunal or caseworker should be aware of, distinct from interpreting at the hearing itself.

Instructing me for this work
£65 per hour remote, one-hour minimum. £85 per hour in person UK-wide, three-hour minimum. All dialects, all settings. A free 30-minute pre-instruction consultation is available to confirm the client's dialect and plan logistics.
Legal aid instructions
Civil legal aid interpreting is remunerated at the LAA-prescribed rate — currently £28 per hour, non-London. Private and direct instructions are quoted at the rates above.
