What the setting demands
Family proceedings ask clients to describe intimate and often traumatic matters to a room of strangers. The interpreter is the only person in that room speaking the client's language, and clients frequently look to them for reassurance the role does not permit.
Holding that line — warm in manner, strictly neutral in function, everything on the record — is the whole skill. I interpret what is said, including the hesitations and the qualifications, because in a fact-finding hearing those carry weight.
Cultural context
Kinship terms in Arabic do not map cleanly onto English. Words rendered as 'cousin', 'uncle' or 'aunt' can describe relationships of very different closeness and obligation, which matters when the court is assessing who a child may safely live with.
Where the court would benefit from a written note on naming conventions, kinship or customary practice, that can be provided under separate instruction rather than offered from the interpreter's chair mid-hearing.
Clearance
Current Enhanced DBS certificate. Remote attendance by CVP or Teams is available for most directions and case management hearings.
Instructing me for this work
£65 per hour remote, one-hour minimum. £85 per hour in person UK-wide, three-hour minimum. All dialects, all settings. A free 30-minute pre-instruction consultation is available to confirm the client's dialect and plan logistics.
