Modern slavery, trafficking and NRM
National Referral Mechanism interviews, reasonable and conclusive grounds decisions, and trafficking prosecutions.
Trauma-informed does not mean softened
Interpreting for a survivor requires steady pacing, no interruption of a difficult account, and complete fidelity — including to the parts that are fragmented or out of sequence. Disordered recall is a recognised feature of traumatic memory, and an interpreter who tidies an account into a clean chronology has damaged it.
I render what is said, in the order it is said, and let the decision-maker assess it.
Terminology
The vocabulary of exploitation, debt bondage and control does not travel cleanly between Arabic varieties, and the words a Yemeni or Sudanese survivor uses to describe what happened may be regional, euphemistic or deliberately indirect.
This is a setting where instructing an interpreter with the right dialect background is not a refinement. It is the difference between an account that is understood and one that is not.
